K9/K1A1 Hydraulic Motor Performance Test Equipment Overhaul

4 photos

An overhaul project in which GENEQ fully serviced the hydraulic system and control console of aging K9/K1A1 hydraulic motor performance test equipment, restoring test reliability and extending equipment life.

K9/K1A1 hydraulic motor test equipment overhaul

The hydraulic motors fitted to the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the K1A1 main battle tank are critical components whose performance must be proven during production and maintenance. The dedicated equipment that verifies this performance is the K9 hydraulic motor performance test equipment.

The biggest problem was the age of the equipment. Operated for many years since delivery without a thorough overhaul, its hydraulic valves and key functional parts had gradually deteriorated, and unexpected faults had begun to recur. The hydraulic system in particular, with its many interconnected valves, made tracing the root cause of a problem a time-consuming task.

This went beyond a simple equipment fault: it had become a risk to the entire production and maintenance schedule.

Defense test equipment rarely has a backup unit. When the one machine stops, every downstream inspection and delivery is delayed, so a proactive overhaul was needed before a failure occurred.

Scope of the overhaul

GENEQ divided the test equipment into three areas for the overhaul.

Hydraulic power unit maintenance

Hydraulic power unit maintenance

For the hydraulic power unit, the heart of the test equipment, all valves were replaced and key spare parts were secured to prevent repeat failures. The hydraulic tank was cleaned internally and leak points were repaired, the filter elements were replaced, and the hydraulic pump, a key functional component, was serviced with spares secured as well.

Control console improvements

Control console improvements

A power conditioner was fitted to stabilize the power supply, and aging peripherals such as the printer, printer table and keyboard were replaced. Inside the console, an electronic dehumidifier and LED work lights were newly installed to prevent moisture damage to the instruments and make maintenance easier.

Test bench instrument maintenance

Test bench instrument maintenance (sump tank cleaning)

The instruments that determine the reliability of test results, including pressure gauges, digital indicators, torque transducers and pressure sensors, were inspected and replaced, with spares secured. The sump tank was cleaned and the filter elements replaced, improving hydraulic fluid cleanliness.

Improvements after the overhaul

  • Test pressure, which had been creeping upward as the valves aged, was stabilized at the original setpoint

  • Recurring hydraulic system faults were eliminated at the source, minimizing the risk of unplanned downtime

  • Spares for key functional parts now allow rapid recovery if a failure does occur

  • Power stabilization and instrument maintenance improved the accuracy and reliability of test data

GENEQ's test equipment maintenance capability

Maintaining defense test equipment means more than replacing failed parts. It requires understanding the equipment's operating history and aging pattern, then diagnosing the hydraulic, electrical and instrumentation areas as an integrated whole. Through the K9/K1A1 hydraulic motor performance test equipment overhaul, GENEQ carried out the entire process, from writing the specification through maintenance, commissioning and verification, supporting the life extension and stable operation of aging defense test equipment.
